It depends on the field. A PO Box cannot be the registered office because that office must be a Texas street address where the registered agent can be personally served during normal business hours. Texas Form 205 expressly allows a PO Box or street address for the separate initial mailing-address field.
What Texas Law Actually Says
The Texas Business Organizations Code requires every LLC to designate a registered agent and registered office in Texas. The registered office must be a street address where process can be personally served during normal business hours; the official Form 205 instructions state that it may not be solely a mailbox service or telephone-answering service.
Form 205 separately requires an initial mailing address. The Texas Secretary of State's official instructions say that this field may be a PO Box or a street address.
Three Address Fields on Your Texas LLC Filing — and Which Accept a PO Box
Do not treat every address field as interchangeable. Each field on Form 205 serves a distinct purpose:

How Banks, the IRS, and Google Treat Addresses
Acceptance is institution- and purpose-specific:
- Banks and payment providers: Know-your-customer reviews often distinguish a physical business location, legal address, owner residence, and mailing address. A street-formatted mailbox does not guarantee approval; each institution applies its own rules.
- IRS: Form SS-4 has separate mailing-address and street-address fields. Use truthful information that fits the form instructions; an EIN is free directly from the IRS.
- Google Business Profile: Google says a rented mailing address where the business does not operate is not eligible. A co-working office generally needs permanent signage, customer access, and staffing by the business during stated hours. A mail address alone does not create eligibility.

What Is a Virtual Address and Does It Solve the Problem?
A commercial mail receiving agency (CMRA) receives mail for customers at a street-formatted address after the required USPS authorization process. This can be useful as a mailing address, but it is not the same thing as a private office or an operating location.
A CMRA address may use a street-and-unit format. Do not assume a unit number proves occupancy or authorization:

Whether an activated address is appropriate for a filing, bank, license, tax form, or online profile still depends on that recipient's rules and on how the business actually operates.
The USPS Distinguishes Between Street Addresses and PO Boxes
It is worth understanding how USPS classifies these differently. A PO Box is a numbered compartment at a post office that the USPS directly controls. A CMRA virtual address is a street address at a private business that holds a USPS authorization. When you receive mail at a CMRA address, it goes through the normal street-delivery process and is logged by the CMRA operator.
This is why USPS requires Form 1583 for CMRA customers — the USPS needs to know who is receiving mail at that address, since the building is not a post office they operate directly. A PO Box has identity verification built into the PO Box rental process; a virtual address requires Form 1583 to accomplish the same thing.
Common Workarounds That Do Not Work
Some founders use a home address temporarily or list someone else's address without permission. A home address may be copied into public records, while an unauthorized or inaccurate address can cause a rejected filing, missed notice, account review, or dispute with the address owner.
Use an eligible registered agent and registered office for service of process. Separately choose an accurate mailing or operating address for each form. Never list a friend's, provider's, or shared address without authorization.
